Milano Centrale is the main railway station of Milan and the largest train station in Europe by volume. The station is located at the northern end of central Milan. It was officially inaugurated in 1931 to replace the old central station (built in 1864), which was a transit station but with a limited number of tracks and space, and it could not handle the increased traffic caused by the opening of the Galleria del Sempione in 1906.

— Flory, Massimiliano Finazzer. La Stazione Centrale di Milano: Il Viaggio e l’immagine. Skira, 2005.

The first Milano Centrale station, opened in 1864 in the area now occupied by the Piazza della Repubblica in the south of the modern station, was designed by French architect Louis-Jules Bouchot (1817–1907), and its architectural style was reminiscent of Parisian buildings of that period.

The station was designed to replace Porta Tosa station (opened in 1846 as the terminal of the line to Treviglio and eventually Venice) and Porta Nuova station (opened in 1850 as the second terminus on the line to Monza, which was eventually extended to Chiasso) and was interconnected with all lines, either existing or under construction, surrounding Milan. It remained in operation until 30 June 1931, when the current station was opened. There is now no trace of the old station left.

Designing a space where Muslims can pray, gather, and study their religion has been a controversial topic in recent years in Milan. To push this topic even further, a unique site has been chosen in Milan, located under the train tracks between Stazione Centrale and the Memorial to the Shoah.

Because of the characteristics of the site, the mosque is located inside the old warehouse of the existing train station. In this way, the mosque can be seen as an object, as a machine inside another machine, which is the Stazione Centrale.

Because of the characteristic of the side the mosque needs to be put inside the old warehouse of the existing train station. Accordingly,  the mosque can be seen as an object, put it better, as a machine (mosque), inside another machine (Stazione Centrale).

In this frame, the role of the mosque is considered as an urban artifact in dialogue with the city through the edges of Stazione Centrale. Due to this fact, the public space in front of the main entrance is activated by using a monumental shape as the Mihrab in the prayer room, which simultaneously can be a sign for identifying the mosque in the scale of the surrounding neighborhood and a replacement for the Minaret, as a strong billboard in the urban scene.

1.2000 CONTEXT PLAN copia

Blending the mosque with its urban context gives more character to the project as a part of the whole, being recognizable but barely visible. This intention is rooted in the controversial discussion of building a mosque for muslims as the minority in a socio-cultural context of a Christian-based city like Milan.

The entrance to the Mosque consists of a 50-meter passage, which clears the users’ minds. Within this journey, thoughts and noise will be filtered. The corridor is set to reach the prayer room as the main space. Once the filtration occurs, social activities happen inside the mosque. A unique space is given to the community, a place where kids can play, and people can gather. The community hall is the vestibule and the gate to the prayer room, library, and auditorium. In fact, the community hall, as the core of the entire project, ties up the mosque; an architecture that creates public pockets, and most importantl,y generates the continuation of the city.

The issue of giving a direction for religious rituals, practices, and actions became crucial. Consequently, specific directions were defined from point to point with an order to access different areas. This importance has been achieved by using different types of ceilings according to the function. Finally, to counteract the site’s ventilation limitations, the design strategy is focused on bringing in the air flow through ducts, which are visible to redirect and distribute air through the entire building. The golden pipes become sacred, not only enhancing the importance of the air flow but also providing a wayfinding principle for navigation within the mosque more efficiently.
